Joseph Gales Sr. 1761-1841 |
Joseph Gales Sr, was an English journalist who was forced to flee England soon after the American Revolution for printing political views that were in sympathy with those of the former colonists. He left his wife Winifred, his family and his business eventually settling in Philadelphia before traveling to North Carolina where his established another paper. He and his wife were Abolitionists, Unitarians and considered free-thinkers the remarkableness of this being characterized in a journal on southern history article entitled
Winifred and Joseph Gales, Liberals in the Old South (1944). Joseph served as the mayor of Raleigh, North Carolina and has been profiled numerous times.
